Cardiologist Visit #1

Wednesday, the 15th of January, we went to Haleigh's first cardiologist appointment. Aunt Ashley came with us, for some support.

They, of course, did their own EKG's and it does show a right bundle branch block.

Then they sent us down the hall for an echocardiogram.

Then it was time for a check up and the results.

The "quick results" from the echo showed that not does Haleigh have a RBBB, but that she also has a "leaky aorta". Her physical exam came out normal.

We have a stress test tomorrow. This will show us how Haleigh's body is tolerating these issues. This may very well just be Haleigh's "normal" for a while. I am really hoping and praying that this is the case and that we can resume with all activities.

We will obviously have to continue cardiologist check ups, but the doctor said that there are usually not any issues with these types of things until about 12-14 years old. I am praying we don't run into issues then either, but we know now that these conditions exist and we can take appropriate measures.

Please continue to pray for great results tomorrow!

Normal!

Haleigh's pediatrician's office called....and her liver enzymes are normal from Tuesday's blood work. Yay!

The Beginning of Something

Monday early evening I picked the kids up from my mother-in-law's house. I walked in the door and immediately noticed Haleigh's lips were blue. Of course, she was at the door to greet me. It was so obvious I made a comment...thinking they were going to say she ate some blue candy or even had a pen in her mouth. To my surprise my MIL said that her lips had been blue for a while and that she had not eaten anything blue. I was secretly startled. That's not normal. She had no obvious signs of breathing difficulty and she was talking just fine. I quickly got them together and as soon as I got into my vehicle I called my friend and asked if I could borrow her pulse oximeter.

As soon as we got back home I put it on her. Her sat's were in the low nineties, high eighties. Heart rate normal. Scary, but wasn't convinced just yet. Surely there was something wrong with the pulse ox.

So, I sat her down and warmed her up. Just made her rest for a few minutes and then checked again. Normal. 99% SPO2, and normal heart rate. Her lips were no longer blue. Stumped.

I made her walk down our little hallway a few minutes. It happened again. Lips blue. Sat low 90's. Except this time her heart rate dropped down to 54. At this point I was  scared.

I had her sit down again. Lips pink again. Normal numbers.

I let her just sit and rest while I called her pediatrician. They put me on the phone with a nurse because they were closing. She advised that I take her to urgent care. So, I had to make the phone call to Cody to tell him what was going on. I always dread that part.

I knew what was going to happen though. I knew that I was going to take her and everything was going to be fine. And they were going to think I was crazy. But I am not. And this is not normal.

In the mean time, while we were waiting on Cody to get home I had her walk again and checked her numbers. Same as before. Lips blue.

So we get to urgent care and, of course, everything is reading normal. They do an EKG. Then they do another one. Then they do another one. Then another. She keeps saying that Haleigh is moving too much. Haleigh wasn't moving at all. And you don't have to be still as a statue for an EKG. I do know this from experience.

I kept asking if it was okay. The EKG lady said yes.

They had done blood work and the doctor came in and said that her white blood cell count was high so they were going to test her for strep, flu, and urine. I personally felt like the strep and flu were unnecessary but fine. Better to be safe than sorry. I also insisted that they walk with her and check her oxygen levels while she was walking. (They didn't. I did it myself.)

So, I took her down to the bathroom to collect her urine sample and as soon as we got back the nurse came in and recorded some numbers. She said  that she was recording her numbers after she had been walking.

Oh no. That wasn't "walking". I asked for numbers on exertion. So, I told them I was going to walk her up and down the hall a few times then we could record her numbers. So we did. But they didn't even bother to check her sat WHILE she was moving. I was kind of frustrated at this point. I even took her up to the nurses station to show them that her lips were blue. They agreed, but made no attempt to quickly check her O2 level. I took her back to her room and plugged her in to the pulse ox. By the time it picked up she had been in bed long enough for it to go back to normal. This is when my anxiety really set it in.

The doctor comes in and tells is that she has a bladder infection so they are sending us home with antibiotics and that we do need to see a cardiologist. He did repeat the cardiologist part a few times. He still mentioned nothing about her EKG's being abnormal. Nothing.

So, I left thinking I was going to be calling a cardiologist the next morning and praying we could get in sooner than later.

The next day Haleigh's pediatrician called and insisted that she come in. Thank God they did. I wasn't planning on taking her in because I didn't figure it was going to be any different than what went down at urgent care. I was going to be referred to a cardiologist. Well, I was referred to a cardiologist but I also learned some other things.

Haleigh was lost about 10lbs since October 2012, and has not grown. Which, we knew that she hadn't grown much. Her doctor also said that her urine needs to be cultured and that based on the tests it doesn't necessarily mean she has an infection but that since we already started the antibiotics just to stay on them and finish them. She also said that her liver enzymes were slightly elevated so she did want to double check that. Just to be 100%. She was also concerned because her EKG's were ABNORMAL!!! They were showing right bundle branch block.

Hello!!!! Parenting fail! I didn't even pull her EKG's out and look at them because nobody mentioned that they were abnormal. Sure enough.....RBBB.

There are a few things going on with Haleigh right now, but we have to start at the top and work our way down. So, now we wait until Wednesday when we see the cardiologist.

I am one nervous mommy.

Team Work!

* Just for the record: that big, not pretty, silver building-cooler looking thing in the background of most of these pics is Cody's rod shop.
